Between May and September 2021, the HSE will be visiting fabricated metal businesses to ensure employers are protecting workers from hazardous welding fume and metalworking fluids.
Letters are currently being sent to businesses that will receive a visit from a HSE inspector which must be acknowledged and replied to by the end of March 2021. Inspections will take place later, between May and September, giving employers the opportunity to assess their current efforts and control measures of metal working processes. Welding fume and metalworking fluids can cause respiratory disease and lung cancer in workers exposed to the hazardous substances.
Simple, low cost checks to existing fume and oil mist extraction systems, such as an LEV test, will provide the peace of mind that systems are operating effectively and adequately protecting workers.
New extraction systems and extraction equipment such as downdraught benches, extraction arms and hoods, oil mist filtration units are all solutions that will protect employees and ensure a safe workplace for all.
