Metalworking Fluid (MFW) Control And Ventilation
A growing concern is the risk of occupational asthma, occupational hypersensitivity pneumonitis and other breathing problems from exposure to mist from metalworking fluids (MWFs).
LEV Fume Ventilation Experts
How can I protect my team from the risks of metalworking fluid?
COSHH Regulations 2002 require employers to carry out a suitable and sufficient risk assessment for those exposed to MWFs. The risk assessment should identify the measures required to ensure that exposure is either prevented or adequately controlled (kept to a minimum). This means reducing inhalation of MWF mist to levels “as low as reasonably practicable” (ALARP).
To control exposure to MWFs effective engineering control, usually LEV is essential. Under COSHH Regulations the LEV must be suitably maintained, and also subject to statutory thorough examination & testing (TExT) at least once every 14 months. However, in itself, this is not enough, and additional measures should include:
- Recirculating LEV systems should have a suitable high efficiency filter
- Airflow indicators and or filter condition monitors should be fitted
- Machines should be enclosed where practical
- Establish concise details on the content of the MWFs
- Door should be fitted with a time delay to ensure that the mist is cleared from the enclosure before the operator opens the doors, thus ensuring no mist enters the breathing zone
- Ensure that the MWF delivery variables (e.g. volume and rate of flow to the tool, operating temperature and cutting tool speed) are set to minimise MWF mist
- Ensure that a preventative programme is in place to inspect and maintain control measures such as LEV
- Ensure that the LEV logbook is completed daily/weekly
- Ensure operators are suitably trained, including reading the LEV user manual
- Conduct health surveillance
- Ensure MWF is correctly mixed & quality maintained
Generally speaking, water based MWFs create less mist than neat oils, however, all must be treated with caution.
HSE inspectors focus on how employers ensure workers are protected from exposure to fluid or mist generated by computer numerical control /CNC machines and that regular health checks are in place. There are three areas where manufacturing companies, particularly smaller companies, commonly fail on compliance:
- Not having local exhaust ventilation
- Not completing regular fluid quality checks
- Failing to provide regular health checks for lung and skin conditions.
