Wood Dust Extraction & Ventilation

All wood dust is potentially hazardous, this includes hardwood and softwood dust. Both can be small enough to enter an individual’s lungs through inhalation.

Did you know that carpenters and joiners are four times more likely to develop asthma than other UK workers? This is just one of the health effects associated with wood dust, it can also cause paranasal sinuses and even cancer.

Activities such as sawing, routing, sanding and other joinery activities can all produce wood dust. That is why it is important to have an extraction system in place and enforced through COSHH regulations, a local exhaust ventilation (LEV) system is a highly effective method of controlling wood dust.
