An engineering company, located in Derbyshire, contacted Impact Technical Services as their current flexible extraction arms were not providing effective fume control of their welding process. The system had been incorrectly designed with no consideration to the sizing of the duct and extraction fan, resulting in duct velocities and hood capture velocities being lower than the minimum level as specified within HSG 258 – Controlling Airborne Contaminants at Work guidelines. Impact proposed to remove the existing ducted system to the two flexible extraction arms. The two extraction arms were re-used and connected to a correctly sized ducted system. These arms were utilised to serve as local extraction above the two welding benches for smaller items of work. For the larger continuous welding process normally conducted in the middle of the workshop; Impact proposed to supply an LE4000 pivotal extraction arm. This arm would provide the adjustability required for correct positioning around the steel work when producing continuous welds within the middle of the workshop, but would also provide the flexibility to be utilised for larger welding tasks on the adjacent benches. The extraction arm is extremely versatile and incorporates a horizontal & a vertical pivot point and a 360° rotating console connection so the hood can easily be positioned close to the contaminant source in a vertical, diagonal or horizontal orientation. The LE4000 extraction arm was fitted with a 1500mmx300mm aluminium hood incorporating our V-baffle design providing a concentrated, even airflow across the length of the hood. These hoods are designed specifically for larger welding areas and reduce the need for continuous positioning by the operator compared to a traditional welding hood. Impact also supplied a centralised ducted system connecting to the two existing 160mm diameter extraction arms & the new LE4000 pivotal extraction arm using spirally wound circular hot dip galvanised prime steel ductwork. The operations manager from the company was very complimentary about Impact’s services. “I would like to say a massive thank you to the engineers that came to fit the new extraction in our workshop. The guys were very professional and did a great job. They are a credit to your company. It was done with minimal disruption and we’re really pleased with it. From the start, when we met with your LEV Design Engineer, to the finish, it was a pleasure working with Impact”. Visit Extraction Product Range here.
