LEV Statistics
Why are LEV systems important for a business?
Each year, over 12,000 workers develop lung diseases from breathing in hazardous substances at work.
UK businesses can help prevent this by investing in an LEV extraction system. A well-designed, properly installed solution can effectively protect workers while keeping your workplace COSHH compliant.

LEV System Design Experts
Over 30 years of LEV Design Experience
A well-designed LEV system is essential for efficiency and worker safety. With over 30 years of experience, we have the expertise to design, install, and modify your LEV system to meet your specific needs.
Our BOHS P602-certified design engineers ensure every system meets industry standards and provides effective protection. When designing a system, we carefully consider key factors outlined by the HSE (Health & Safety Executive), including:
- Hood/Enclosure – Collects and contains the contaminant as close as possible to its source.
- Ducts – Transports contaminants away, either discharging them or returning clean air.
- Filter/Air Cleaning Device – Removes contaminants before air reaches the fan.
- Fan – Drives airflow through the system.
LEV System Installation
Efficient, Trusted LEV System Installation & Commissioning
After installation, we provide everything you need to ensure your system runs safely and efficiently, as specified by the HSE:
- User instructions and system diagrams – For clear guidance on operation
- Logbook – To track testing and maintenance
- Commissioning report – Includes air flow measurements, duct air speed, filter pressure drop, and a maintenance guide
- Airflow indicator (optional) – For real-time monitoring
- Parts and spares list – We can provide all necessary components for system upkeep
Support at Every Step
Using your LEV system
Your LEV system is now up and running. To keep your system running smoothly, follow these steps:
- Always follow the provided instructions
- Regularly inspect the ducting, fan and filter for signs of damage
- Any damage should be repaired immediately
- Check weekly to ensure that the system is working properly and that airflow indicators (if installed) are functioning
- Review failure patterns to make maintenance easier
- Contact us to schedule a thorough examination and testing at least once every 14 months (as specified by HSE)
Testimonial
“ITS supplied, installed, and commissioned a suspended vacuum unit inside a rail depot. The installation was carried out to a high-quality standard, and the team had excellent knowledge of the equipment.
Onsite issues encountered were resolved through their collaborative approach to problem-solving. ITS demonstrated an excellent attitude toward safety and the documentation required to carry out work in a rail depot environment, such as inductions, permits, WPPs, and RAMS. All operatives understood the requirements and expectations of site rules and responded positively to feedback.
I would highly recommend ITS, and we look forward to working with them in the near future.”

LEV Testing FAQs
Browse our FAQs to find out more about LEV Testing
Why do I need LEV Testing?
Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV) systems are essential for workplace safety, helping to remove airborne dust, fumes, and other hazardous substances. Under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and COSHH Regulation 9, employers are required to regularly monitor and maintain these systems to ensure they operate effectively. Keeping your LEV system compliant helps protect employees from harmful exposure.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) carries out random workplace inspections across the UK to ensure businesses are following proper safety procedures. If a company fails to meet HSE guidelines, they will be advised on corrective actions—and continued non-compliance can result in fines.
Scheduling annual LEV testing is a cost-effective way to stay compliant and protect workers. It’s a simple step that ensures a safe and legal working environment.
What is involved in an LEV Test?
An LEV test is a detailed inspection of your extraction system, including ducts, hoods, and filters.
It also evaluates the system’s technical performance and overall condition to ensure it operates effectively. All tests are conducted in line with HSE regulations. If your LEV system does not meet the required standards, we will provide recommendations to help bring it into compliance.
What are the LEV regulations?
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) enforces workplace safety regulations, including those for dust and fume exposure under the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations 2002.
Under COSHH Regulation 9, employers must prevent, control, maintain, and monitor exposure to hazardous substances. If your workplace uses a Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV) system, it must be kept in good working order, properly maintained, and clean.
Key Requirements:
- LEV systems must be inspected and tested at least once every 14 months (or every 6 months in some cases).
- Test records must be kept for at least five years.

Is an airflow indicator required on an LEV System?
While airflow indicators are not legally required, employers must ensure their LEV system is working effectively. A drop in airflow—caused by duct damage, material buildup, or other issues—can reduce efficiency and put employees at risk.
Airflow indicators provide an instant visual check that airflow is being properly maintained, giving employers confidence in their system’s performance. HSE’s LEV guidance (HSG258) recommends airflow indicators as the best way to quickly detect any airflow issues.
Will LEV systems be labelled after testing?
Yes, our examiners will label your LEV system after each test.
While this is not a legal requirement, COSHH regulations state that employers must maintain LEV performance and conduct a thorough examination at least once every 14 months. Labels provide a clear record of the last inspection and the next due date, ensuring that employers, supervisors, and operators stay informed. They also indicate if a system has failed, prompting immediate action.
Why are LEV hoods labelled after testing?
Why are red "failed" labels placed on LEV Hoods?
If an LEV hood does not pass the test, HSE guidance recommends placing a red “failed” label on it. This ensures supervisors and operators are immediately aware of the issue.
The label can be applied by our examiners with employer approval or issued to a responsible person. A short emergency report will accompany the label, detailing the fault and the necessary corrective actions.
Once repairs are completed, an examiner will recheck the system to confirm that it effectively controls hazardous exposure. The failed label can then be removed.
LEV Legal Responsibilities
Employer FAQs
Why does my LEV system need to be examined and tested?
Health and safety laws require businesses to assess risks from hazardous substances and take action to protect workers.
If your workplace uses a Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV) system to control dust, fumes, or vapors, it must be maintained to ensure it continues to provide effective protection. In addition, a thorough examination and test (TExT) must be carried out at least once every 14 months to verify that the system is performing as intended.
What is the purpose of an LEV examination?
Who conducts the examination and what are their responsibilities?
Our qualified examiners have the knowledge, experience, and skills needed to carry out a thorough LEV examination and test.
Using installation data, they assess whether the system is still performing at the required level. The final report will indicate if your LEV system is compliant or if corrective actions are needed.
As an employer, you should:
- Read and understand the report.
- Ask questions if anything is unclear.
- Take action on any recommendations to maintain system effectiveness.
What should be included in an LEV examination report?
Our examiners follow HSE’s Approved Code of Practice guidelines to ensure the report contains essential details, including the system’s performance compared to its intended operation. This report serves as an official record of compliance with health and safety regulations.
