LEV System Documentation

The HSE expect business owners to hold specific LEV system documentation as evidence that you are making every effort to protect your employees from hazardous airborne substances in the workplace.

LEV System Documentation

Every LEV system requires several documents that cover the process, the hazard, the operators and the system. These documents include, but may not be limited to:

  • Process risk assessment
  • LEV commissioning report
  • LEV thorough examination & test (TExT) report
  • LEV user manual
  • LEV logbook
  • Workplace air quality monitoring report
  • Training records
  • DSEAR risk assessment

Process Risk Assessment

Before any work involving hazardous substances begins, employers must complete a detailed risk assessment, including the substance’s properties and Workplace Exposure Limit (WEL) where applicable.

LEV Commissioning Report

Every new or modified LEV system must have a commissioning report confirming it controls exposure as designed. If missing, a retrospective Initial Thorough Examination & Test (ITExT) should be carried out.

LEV Thorough Examination & Test (TExT)

LEV systems must be examined and tested at least every 14 months, with reports kept for 5 years.

Workplace Air Quality Monitoring

Required under COSHH Regulation 10 to prove compliance with EH40 limits, particularly for carcinogens, asthmagens, or substances with a Biological Monitoring Guidance Value (BMGV).

LEV Logbook & User Manual

Maintain up-to-date records of system checks, maintenance, repairs, usage instructions, spares, troubleshooting guidance, and detailed diagrams/photos.

Training Records

Under COSHH Regulation 7, employees must be trained to operate LEV systems, maintain them, and spot faults. Training should be documented and updated regularly.

DSEAR Compliance

Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations (2002) require identifying, classifying, and controlling risks from flammable, explosive, or corrosive substances.
