From October 2025, HSE will begin inspections of motor vehicle repair businesses to ensure employers are protecting workers from isocyanate exposure – the leading cause of occupational asthma in the UK.

What are isocyanates?

Isocyanates are a group of highly reactive chemicals used in many paints, varnishes, foams, and adhesives. In spray painting, they can become airborne as fine mists or vapours. When inhaled, these particles can irritate the respiratory system, causing occupational asthma and other long-term health issues.

Because isocyanates are invisible and often odourless, exposure can occur even when the workspace appears clean and well-ventilated. That’s why effective control measures and regular monitoring are essential.

How can I protect my workers?

Isocyanates are commonly found in vehicle paints and lacquers used during the spray painting process. Under the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations, employers must take steps to prevent or control worker exposure to isocyanates. The HSE’s latest inspections are focusing on three key areas where businesses often fall short:

Health checks are also essential. Under COSHH regulations, you must provide:

  • Regular health surveillance to detect early signs of occupational asthma
  • Biological monitoring – a simple urine test – to confirm control measures are working effectively

Together, these steps help protect workers’ health, ensure compliance with HSE standards, and provide peace of mind that operations are running safely.

How Can We Help?

We provide reliable extraction solutions to help you meet HSE requirements and protect workers from isocyanate exposure, such as:

Spray Booth Extraction

Our spray booth ventilation systems are designed to control isocyanate exposure, ensuring safe air quality and full compliance with HSE and COSHH regulations. We design, install, test, and maintain spray booth extraction systems that meet the latest safety standards.

Fume Extraction

Our fume extraction systems capture and remove hazardous vapours and airborne particles at the source, protecting worker health and helping your business stay ready for inspection. We provide full LEV testing, installation, and maintenance across the UK.

With over 25 years of experience, our accredited engineers develop reliable, compliant extraction solutions that help you protect your team and your business.
