At a welding company in Birmingham, a HSE inspector found that there were no control measures in place to protect workers from welding fumes. One welder was unprotected from fumes for 7-8 hours a day. The HSE asked the company to perform a COSHH assessment to identify ways to reduce exposure levels, however, when the HSE returned, its advice had been ignored and the assessment had not been performed.

The company was then served with an improvement notice which required them to reduce exposure levels to welding fumes, failure to comply would lead to prosecution and a fine. The company fitted a local exhaust ventilation (LEV) system to their welding benches which extracts the carcinogenic fumes at the source before they can reach the welder.
